Meeting Regulatory and Compliance Requirements

Exsys Corvid™ knowledge automation systems are ideal for capturing regulatory knowledge to produce interactive on-line systems that provide detailed, situation-specific advice comparable to talking to an expert.  From handling government regs to company policy, businesses deploy Corvid systems on web sites for 24/7 accessibility. User’s can access an interactive system from their web browser, answer some questions and get precise reasoned advice on how to comply with regulations.

The need to follow complex regulations is a fact of life with numerous government requirements and company policies.  Failure to do so may lead to liability and carry serious penalties.  Many regulations are complex and difficult to remember or understand in detail.  Some have special cases or exceptions that change with time.  Experts that work with regulations on a daily basis know how to apply them, but the average person can’t be expected to remember all the details of all regulations they have to follow.  It would be ideal if compliance experts were always available to answer everyone’s questions, but that is just not practical. However, this can be done quickly and efficiently with Corvid.

A Corvid system is driven by underlying regulatory advisory logic, so it will only ask necessary and relevant questions.  If it detects a potential for a special case or exception, the system will ask additional questions to gather the information needed to determine if it applies. The systems’ advice is based on the same logic and process that the human expert uses to provide recommendations.  The user input and system advice can be automatically saved in cases where documentation of the decision may be needed.  When regulations require actions such as generating a document or completing a form, Corvid systems are able to greatly simplify the process or do this automatically.

Most regulations state when something must be done or under what conditions there is an exception, which is ideal for conversion into Corvid’s If/Then rule structure.  In fact, regulatory systems are often one of the easiest types of systems to build.  Regulations usually can be directly converted to Corvid rules and fielded using virtually the same wording as the regulations themselves.   Corvid’s Backward Chaining Inference Engine makes it easy to write regulations in high-level terms, with small reusable sub-sets of rules to derive the higher-level values.  The rules themselves are written in English (or whatever language is preferred) and algebra.  The rules are easily read by someone with no training in Corvid and as regulations change or get reinterpreted, the corresponding rules can be found in the system and modified as needed.  Since Corvid’s Inference Engine uses rules dynamically, the effects of a change in a lower level will automatically propagate throughout the system due to backward chaining.

In addition to making it easy to follow government regulations, Corvid systems can also be used to implement company policies.  Fielded internally on an intranet or as stand-alone applications these advisors can facilitate HR, health and safety, security and all the other policies often found in the “Company Handbook”. They provide accurate, consistent advice automatically without key staff being interrupted to answer standard repetitive regulatory questions.

OSHA, HUD, USDA, USAF, SBA, and many Fortune 100 companies have built regulatory knowledge automation systems with Exsys tools.
