The environmental compliance support system (ECSS) developed at Los Alamos Technical Associates is an integrated set of tools that combine data about activities, sites, and legal or other environmental constraints. The expert system uses modern information technology capabilities, a geographic information system, a relational database, and text-search system.
The ECSS allows a manager to select candidate sites and determine which sites are environmentally optimal for each activity. It assures environmental compliance and minimizes the documentary and administrative burdens. The system was developed on personal computers to provide a high degree of platform independence.
